Glo | Restaurants Victoria

Glo - Restaurants Victoria
Glo’s Afterglow

Once again, the Selkirk Waterfront’s most sought-after hotspot has flipped to a new venue bursting with uniqueness and mystery; all the while promising to bring its patrons a brand new dining experience that will surely make them feel as though they’ve left Victoria entirely. After dining at Glo, I realized the real mystery is whether or not this restaurant will be able to surpass its business predecessor’s short reign?

This Euro-hip restaurant boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that enjoy full views of the Gorge Waterway and East Esquimalt. A private patio area decorates the cement between the building and the Gorge Kayaking Centre. Retro-Glo features a kitschy colour theme of black, white, red, and orange, while several plant pots of grass (as in, lawn grass) grow delicately around the establishment. Additionally, the large, circular bar in the center of the room accommodates two laser screen televisions allowing sports spectators to enjoy the afternoon match.

The European promises that Glo offers come to fruition in its menu. You will not be able to get away from a Mediterranean-influenced meal in this restaurant. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t get something North American here. Glo offers over 60 different dishes to sway its hungry customers. Main entrées such as the Mediterranean Chicken stuffed with Mushroom Duxelle & Pancetta or Lamb Shank with Demi-Glace start at $11.00 for lunch and $16.00 for dinner. A saving grace, Glo offers a terrifically eclectic international beer list with over 50 abroad beers to choose from, several of which are on tap.

For something a little different, consider trying the Tuscan Table, available after 4:30 pm Sunday to Wednesday only. For $16.97, you are able to “Enjoy an Old World Mediterranean Feast” by opting for a four-course plated dinner. Each meal begins with a homemade antipasto, followed by your choice of a salad or the Chef’s Daily Zuppa. Both the main and the dessert are choice as well. For dinner, the Tuscan Table is definitely the best bang for your buck; however heed warning that Glo servers will not oblige any special requests or substitutions. So those of you with an anaphylactic allergy can take a hike.

Glo presents a new and semi-stylish place to eat where patrons can feel comfortable in either jeans or dress suits. The conflict I still have is its claim to be a “Europub.” Anyone who’s ever been to a pub in Europe will tell you, that is not what Glo is serving up. Nonetheless, good food, good beer, good Glo.
