Floyd's Diner | Restaurants Victoria

Floyd's Diner - Restaurants Victoria
Locals Take a Gamble on Floyd’s

Discovering a restaurant that remains untouched by the many tourists visiting Victoria is not easy, especially in the downtown core of our beautiful city. Nevertheless, I think I’ve found a local place that is still unspoiled by even a hint of a Texas drawl or an American dollar bill. Whether it’s because this diner is too indie for our crisp and clean visitors, or maybe it just hasn’t been stumbled-upon yet, Floyd’s Diner stands alone in the crowd amongst the other casual restaurants in Victoria.

The previous garage workshop on the corner of Yates and Quadra now seats locals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. With its cult film décor and offensively mismatched furniture, it’s easy to see why the local downtowners are raving about this unusual little eatery. Floyd’s is a place where the term “dress code” has no meaning, and anyone from hippies to construction workers can come to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

The menu at Floyd’s has all the items you would want and expect at a downtown diner. However, this restaurant is uniquely set apart by its adventurous takes on old classics. A popular lunch favourite is the First Kiss Burger, which the menu describes to be “sorta wet, sloppy, and awkward at first, but ultimately something you’ll remember forever!” The portions at Floyd’s are large, so bring a big appetite regardless of the time of day you’re eating. Most of these hefty menu items start at $9.50.

Floyd’s also embarks on a new dining obscurity by allowing its free-spirited clients to take a gamble when eating out. Order a menu item called The Mahoney and specify to your server how much you want to spend. In return, the kitchen cooks up a tasty surprise. The real wager comes at the end of the meal when you can flip a coin and call heads or tails: if you win, your meal is free; if you lose, you pay double. It ain’t Vegas, but it sure sounds like a fun way to entertain both your dining companions and Floyd’s staff.

Judging by the line-up out the door by nine o’clock on Saturday morning, Floyd’s followers aren’t giving up easily. Floyd’s is a classic diner with a twist on modern pop culture that caters to the so-called misfits of our trendy town. Until further notice, no tourists allowed.
