Rebar - Restaurants Victoria
Rebar: Eat Your Vegetables

Boasting one of the highest restaurants per capita in Canada, Victoria certainly doesn’t lack choice when it comes to eating out. With so much West Coast influence in every eatery establishment, Rebar still finds a way to stand alone in a crowd. This colorful, word-of-mouth restaurant hosts all types of patrons from tree-planters to top executives. Rebar specializes in old favorites with a modern twist and is ever conscious of ensuring the happiness (and health!) of the heart.

While sifting through the four-page beverage menu, I’m happy to sit back and enjoy this busy bistro. The neon green-painted walls, plants in the windows, and wheat grass buffet make it easy to see why local Health Nuts rave about this little restaurant. But Rebar has more than just tofu and “fat-free” to flaunt.

Although the closest item here you’ll find to meat is either egg or salmon, this vegetarian establishment is alive with fresh and local produce, seasonings, and ingredients. Daring a new take on eggs benedict, I ordered Lox & Poached Eggs, which replaced the usual ham with smoked salmon and the beloved hollandaise with herb-caper sauce. The new version was brave but delicious. This hippy-inspired locale has a number of menu hits including its infamous Rebar Salad – a ginormous serving of organic lettuce, beets, carrots, cucumber, tomato, chickpeas, sunflower sprouts, toasted seeds and nuts with cold pressed flaxseed oil - all for $8.75. Portions are medium to large and entrées start at $10.00 depending on what time of day your dining. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, Rebar serves up daily specials with its smoothie smorgasbord, meeting every happy heart’s desire.

So popular in fact, dedicated Rebar followers can even purchase the Rebar Modern Food Cookbook by either visiting the website or the restaurant itself.

By maintaining a strong commitment to local suppliers and encouraging a community who dines on fiber instead of french fries, Rebar has quickly built itself a reputation of one of Vancouver Island’s hippest hot spots for original vegetarian fare.
